What I’ve Learned from You, the People Who Buy My Jewelry

Updated: Apr 20

Two people crafting jewelry at a cluttered desk with tools, notes, and a leather bag. One wears a pink sweater, the other a brown jacket.
Working with you teaches me the stories held in every piece.

As Mother’s Day approaches, I find myself thinking less about what people buy and more about why they buy it. After years of creating handmade jewelry- and having the privilege of sending it out into your lives- I’ve noticed something quite powerful: the stories behind each piece matter just as much as the pieces themselves.

The people who buy my jewelry often tell me far more than their ring sizes or favorite gemstones. Through emails, conversations at shows, and handwritten notes mailed to the studio, you’ve shared moments of celebration, your desires to feel creative, and love.  Over time, these stories have shaped me just as much as the work I make.

Here are a few things I’ve learned from you.

Jewelry Is Rarely “Just for Me” (Even When It Is!)

Sometimes, you tell me you’re buying something “just for yourself.” And often, that’s true- and always well deserved! But even then, your choices reflect something more: maybe it's a necklace you're purchasing to mark the end of a hard year. Or a pair of earrings bought after becoming an empty nester! Or an investment ring to celebrate your latest work success.

When you purchase Uncommon Threads Jewelry as a gift, it’s not about an obligation. It’s about touching the other person, down deep in her soul. Whether between mothers and daughters, sisters, or lifelong friends, each piece says, “I celebrate you and what's important to you.”

Motherhood Comes in Many Forms

One of the most powerful things I’ve learned is how broadly you define “mother.” Yes, many of you shop for your own mothers or are mothers yourselves. But just as often, you’re celebrating a woman who showed up for you in quiet and steady ways, whether or not she was "your" mother.

Maybe it was your aunt who encouraged your creativity; a teacher who saw your potential before you did; a friend who stepped in during a difficult season. Your purchases remind me that Mother’s Day isn’t just one story-it’s a sparkling constellation.

Art is a Value

For me, art is a constant. It's a truth I can count on no matter the circumstance.  I vibrate with joy when I see you seek pieces for their artful qualities. You ask about how the pieces are made, if the materials are ethically sourced, how I chose to do it this way instead of that. It's so exciting!

What that has taught me is this: you’re not shopping to keep up- you’re writing your own story. Jewelry, for you, is part of a larger love for art and beauty. You're looking for objects that carry soul. Your belief that I can provide them humbles me. I never take it lightly.

Our Work Is About Relationship

The most meaningful lesson of all is this: buying a piece of Uncommon Threads Jewelry isn’t a transaction, it’s a relationship. We talk. You tell me how a piece is worn, by whom, where it travels, and what it has come to mean to you. In return, I try to show up with honesty, care, and craftsmanship worthy of that trust.

As Mother’s Day arrives, I want you to know this: every piece I make is influenced by the woman for whom it is intended. Your stories shape my jewelry pieces as much as my tools do. Thank you for supporting handmade jewelry, for valuing art and experience, and for reminding me that the most beautiful things in life are not the objects we use but the stories they hold.

Happy Mother’s Day!  To you, Mom, and to all the Women in your Life.
